Book Review – IT By Steven King
Many people have watched the film version of IT by genius author Stephen King, but are still blissfully unaware of the truly stunning masterpiece of the book.
The book, on which the film was based, provides a much deeper and more detailed insight into the storyline and friendships of six childhood friends who are forced to battle a horror that they thought they had defeated years ago.
Set in Derry – Maine; you are drawn into this small, seemingly normal town in which children are mysteriously going missing.
A group of six friends start to unravel the mystery of a monster that is living in the sewers, after IT brutally kills group leader Ben’s younger brother Georgie.
This becomes the main focus for the children, to find out what happened to Georgie, and to stop it from happening again.
As the story progresses they encounter Pennywise the Clown, who terrorises them through their childhood. After many different encounters with him that I won’t spoil for those who haven’t read the book or watched the film, the children finally manage to find Pennywise weakness and defeat him. Or so they think.
Many years down the line, having grown up and built new lives for themselves the same group of friends are then summoned back to their home town of Derry to face the monster one last time. Who unleashes another shocking reign of terror upon them.
Pennywise is without doubt one of the most scary fictional characters I have ever encountered, and Stephen King has the ability to make every little part of the story seem as real and as utterly terrifying as if it were happening in your own neighbourhood.
Over all I defy anyone to read this book and not to fall in love with the characters and their friendships as they are constantly put to the test by the evil that is Pennywise the Clown. Their fears, their life and their determination are all captured perfectly by King, who lets you step into the town of Derry alongside the characters and feel their every emotion and fear as if it were your own.
This is possibly one of Stephen King’s most terrifying novels and one that I could not put down.
Regardless of whether or not you have watched the movie you must read this book and prepare to be catapulted into a world of terror by the master of horror himself.
